Al Schmelz was a pitcher for the Mets in 1967. He made two relief appearances with the team. Schmelz had a total of three innings pitched as a Met.
Schmelz made his major league debut at Shea Stadium on September 7, 1967. He pitched the final two innings of a 9-2 Mets loss to the Cardinals. Al also pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a 4-2 Mets loss to the Astros on September 24 at Shea.
Schmelz pitched in the Mets' minor league system in 1968 and 1969. He concluded his career in the Pirates' system in '69.
