The Mets made a deal with the Royals in December of 1995. Outfielder Al Shirley was sent to the Kansas City team in exchange for catcher Brent Mayne. Shirley was a Single-A player who had spent the previous five seasons in the Mets' minor league system. Mayne had six years of major league experience.
As a Met, Mayne played in 70 games during the 1996 season. He batted .263 with a home run and 6 runs batted in. Brent signed with the Seattle Mariners as a free agent in 1997.
Shirley played three seasons in the Royals' system and never reached the major league level.
