The Mets made a deal with the Cubs before the start of the 1994 season. The team traded pitchers Anthony Young and Ottis Smith to the Chicago team for infielder Jose Vizcaino. Young had just come off a horrid year in which he set a major league record for consecutive losses. Smith was a four-year minor leaguer who had pitched in five games at the Triple-A level in '93. Vizcaino had five years of major league experience.

The deal worked out better for the Mets that it did for the Cubs. Vizcaino batted .282 with 456 total bases in three seasons with the team. Jose led the Mets with 146 hits in 1995 and set a team record with hits in nine consecutive at bats in 1996.

Young pitched in 52 games for the Cubs in '94 and '95. He had a 7-10 won-lost record and a 3.87 earned run average. Anthony joined the Astros as a free agent after the '95 season. Smith never pitched in a major league game.
