1977: Tom Seaver pitches a five-hit shutout against the Cardinals in the Mets' home opener for a 4-0 win. John Milner and John Stearns hit home runs in the game.
1981: The Mets defeat the Cubs, 2-1, at Wrigley Field. Mike Cubbage's sacrifice fly scores Hubie Brooks with the winning run in the ninth inning. Starting pitcher Tim Leary, in his major league debut, leaves the game after two innings with an elbow injury.
1988: Ron Darling pitches a five-hit shutout against the Expos in the Mets' home opener. The Mets win, 3-0.
1999: The Mets defeat the Marlins, 8-1, in the home opener at Shea Stadium. Winning pitcher Bobby Jones hits his first major league home run to put the Mets ahead to stay.
2001: Rey Ordonez singles to score Todd Zeile in the 10th inning for a 1-0 Mets win over the Braves at Shea Stadium.
