The Mets faced the Brewers on a Friday night at Shea Stadium. It was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel as Shawn Estes and Milwaukee's Glendon Rusch both threw complete games. It was Estes who came out the winner with a one-hit shutout in the Mets' 1-0 victory.

Estes started the game with six perfect innings. Shawn struck out five batters in keeping the Brewers completely off base. Rusch was just as effective with only three hits allowed, but one of the hits was a home run by Jay Payton in the second inning. The Mets had a one-run lead at the end of the sixth.

Leading off the seventh, Eric Young singled for the Brewers' first hit and baserunner of the game. Estes then got Ronnie Belliard to fly out to center fielder Payton before Young was caught stealing with Jeffrey Hammonds at the plate. Shawn struck out Hammonds to end the inning and pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing only a walk to Jose Hernandez.

Estes struck out Raul Casanova to begin the top of the ninth. Shawn then got Mark Loretta to flyout to right fielder Jeromy Burnitz and Young to ground out to third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo. The Mets had a win on Estes's one-hitter in which he faced only 28 batters.
