The Mets and Expos played on a Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. A crowd of 36,817 fans watched as the Mets came out with a 3-1 victory over Montreal. Tom Glavine recorded his first win as a member of the Mets.
Glavine and Expos' starter Tony Armas each pitched a perfect first inning. In the second, Montreal's Brad Wilkerson hit a two-out single on which Mets' right fielder Jeromy Burnitz made a throw to nail Wil Cordero at home. The game remained scoreless after Glavine shut down the Expos in the top of the third.
To lead off the bottom of the third inning, Glavine singled to center field. Roger Cedeno followed with a double and Roberto Alomar hit a single to score Glavine. A single by Cliff Floyd brought home Cedeno before Alomar crossed the plate on Mo Vaughn's sacrifice fly. Glavine then protected the Mets' three-run lead by setting down Montreal in order in the fourth and fifth innings.
Endy Chavez got a single off Glavine with one out in the top of the sixth inning. After Jose Vidro flied out, Chavez came around to score the Expos' first run on a double by Vladimir Guerrero. Glavine was then relieved by Scott Strickland, who got Cordero on a fly ball to end the inning.
Strickland pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh. In the eighth, Mike Stanton also retired the Montreal hitters in order. Meanwhile, the Mets were held scoreless by the Expos' bullpen.
In the top of the ninth, Armando Benitez got two fly ball outs and allowed a single to Guerrero. He then struck out Orlando Cabrera to end the game. The Mets had a win as Glavine got credit for his first victory with the team.
