Hodges joined the Mets in [[1973]]. In his third game, he hit a home run that put the Mets ahead to stay in a [[June 17, 1973: Hodges' First Homer Beats Padres|3-1 win over the Padres]] on [[June 17]]. During the pennant drive that season, Ron got a run-scoring single in the 13th inning to [[September 20, 1973: The "Ball on the Wall" Play|defeat the Pirates, 4-3, at Shea Stadium]] on [[September 20]]. In [[October 13, 1973: Game One of the World Series|Game 1 of the World Series]], Hodges walked in his only Series plate appearance.

In [[1974]], Hodges appeared in 59 games in his first full season in the majors. He had 30 hits during the year, four of which were home runs. On [[April 28]], Ron's two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a tie and led the Mets to a 6-4 win at San Francisco. He also homered of Hall-of-Famer Bob Gibson in a 5-3 Mets' loss to the Cardinals at Shea on [[June 30]].

After spending the [[1975]] season in the minor leagues, Ron joined the Mets in September. He hit a home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Mets a 9-7 win over the Phillies on [[September 20]]. The following day, he homered in the ninth off [[Tug McGraw]] for the Mets' only two runs in a 4-2 loss to the Phils.

Hodges appeared in 56 games in [[1976]]. For the season, he set personal highs with 35 hits, 24 RBIs and 53 total bases. He also hit four home runs during the '76 season, three of which came in Atlanta. On [[May 11]], Ron and [[Bud Harrelson]] each hit their first homers of the season in a loss to the Braves. Hodges also homered against the Braves on [[July 10]] and [[July 11]] at Atlanta Stadium.

On [[May 19]], [[1977]], Hodges was the catcher for Met pitcher [[Jackson Todd]]'s first major league win. In the game, Ron supported his battery mate with 2 singles and an RBI for a 4-3 victory over the Giants at Shea. His only homer of the '77 season came as a pinch-hitter at Pittsburgh on [[August 11]].

From [[1978]] to [[1980]], Ron played in a total of 142 games and batted .217 with 10 doubles and 17 RBIs. During this period, he got his first major league triple off Joaquin Andujar in a 9-7 Mets win at Houston on [[May 27]], [[1978]]. In '80, Hodges drove in the winning run with a 10th inning double against the Reds on [[May 5]]. In the strike-shortened [[1981]] season, Hodges batted a career-high .302 with 13 hits in 43 times at bat. His only home run of the season came off Bill Lee in the Mets' 4-3 loss to Expos on [[April 19]].

Ron set new highs for himself in [[1982]]. His totals of 56 hits, 12 doubles, 5 home runs and 27 RBIs were among his never-reached-before numbers. In '82, Hodges got his second career triple off the Reds' [[Bruce Berenyi]] in the Mets' 3-2 win at Shea on [[September 4]]. He also hit the only grand slam of his career in a game won by the Mets, 9-1, at Pittsburgh on [[September 8]].

Hodges played in a career-high 110 games in [[1983]]. For the season, he batted .260 and hit 12 doubles to tie his mark from the previous year. In '84, he concluded his career with a .208 batting average in 64 games. He hit a pinch-hit homer to help ignite a Mets comeback in an 8-6 win over the Braves on [[July 12]]. It was his last major league home run. On [[September 25]], he singled in the ninth inning off the Phillies' Larry Andersen to score [[Mookie Wilson]] just before [[Rusty Staub]] hit a game-winning home run. The single was Hodges' last career hit and the win clinched second place for the Mets in the National League East Division.

Brooks was drafted by the Mets out of Arizona State University in [[1978]]. He began his Mets career by hitting .308 in 24 games in [[1980]]. Hubie got his first major hit at San Diego on [[September 6]] and his first home run on [[October 6]] at St. Louis.

In [[1981]], Brooks established himself as a Mets regular. In the strike-shortened season, Hubie led the team with 110 hits, 21 doubles and a .307 batting average. On [[September 20]], he got 4 of the Mets' 22 hits in [[September 20, 1981: Mets Win with 22 Hits|a 7-6 win over the Cardinals]] at [[Shea Stadium]].

After being postponed by an unseasonable blizzard, the Mets and Phillies got the season started a Veterans Stadium. [[Randy Jones]] started the Thursday afternoon game against Philadelphia ace Steve Carlton. The Mets stretched their Opening Day winning streak to eight games by defeating the Phils, 7-2.

The Mets got two runs off Carlton in the first inning. With one out, [[Bob Bailor]] doubled and [[George Foster]] followed with another double to score him. Foster also came around to score on the play after an error by Phillies' second baseman Manny Trillo.

Jones pitched shutout ball for the first five innings. The Phils put two runners on base in the first and fourth, but failed to score against Randy. The Mets made it a 3-0 game on Bailor's double that brought home [[Mookie Wilson]] from first base in the top of the fifth.

The Phillies got their first run of the game when Garry Maddox's single scored Mike Schmidt in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, [[Hubie Brooks]] drew a one-out walk and [[Ron Gardenhire]] singled. Pinch-hitter [[Rusty Staub]] also got a single to score Brooks from second. After Wilson grounded out, Bailor got his third hit of the game with a single to score Gardenhire and pinch-runner [[Wally Backman]]. Carlton was then replaced by reliever Warren Brusstar, who walked Foster and gave up a single to [[Dave Kingman]] that brought around Bailor to make it a 7-1 Mets lead.

[[Ed Lynch]] pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Mets. In the bottom of the ninth, [[Neil Allen]] struck out Dick Davis before giving up a home run to Maddox. Allen then struck out Bo Diaz and got Trillo on a ground ball to shortstop Gardenhire for the final out of the game. The Mets had an Opening Day victory for the eighth year in a row.

The Mets faced the Cubs on Opening Day at Wrigley Field. In his first game as a Met, [[Richie Hebner]] led an offensive attack with nine total bases and four runs batted in. The Mets defeated Chicago, 10-6.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. For the Mets, [[Kelvin Chapman]] and Hebner singled off Cubs' starter Rick Reuschel and [[John Stearns]] followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Chapman from third base. In the bottom half, [[Dave Kingman]] singled off Mets' starter [[Craig Swan]] to score Ivan deJesus. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead on Kingman's run-scoring double in the third, but Hebner's home run in the top of the fourth tied the game for New York.

In the fifth, Swan got a two-out single off Reuschel. [[Lee Mazzilli]] drew a walk and Chapman hit a single to score Swan. Hebner then doubled to bring home Mazzilli and Chapman for a 5-2 Mets lead.

For Chicago, Kingman homered off Swan in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Mazzilli led off with a single, stole second base and went to third on Reuschel's wild pitch. Lee scored on Hebner's one-out double off Cubs' reliever Willie Hernandez. Later in the inning, [[Steve Henderson]] and [[Elliott Maddox]] got singles off Donnie Moore to drive in three more Met runs. Henderson then scored when [[Doug Flynn]] reached on an error to increase the Mets' lead to 10-3.

[[Dwight Bernard]] relieved Swan to begin the bottom of the ninth inning. With two out, the Cubs scored three times against Bernard on an RBI single by Scot Thompson and a two-run double by Ted Sizemore. [[Jesse Orosco]], making his major league debut, then retired Bill Buckner on a fly ball to right fielder Maddox to end the game. The Mets began the season with a victory.

For the first time in 11 years, the Mets' starting pitcher for Opening Day was not [[Tom Seaver]]. With Tom in Cincinnati, [[Jerry Koosman]] got the call for the first game of the season. Jerry pitched a complete game in the Mets' 3-1 win over the Expos at [[Shea Stadium]].

In the top of the first inning, Dave Cash singled and [[Gary Carter]] doubled off Koosman. The Expos also got singles from Chris Speier and Steve Rogers in the second. However, Koosman recorded two strikeouts in each inning to keep Montreal from scoring.

The Mets scored twice against Rogers in the bottom of the second. [[Willie Montanez]] and [[Ken Henderson]] started the inning with back-to-back doubles for one run and a single by [[Doug Flynn]] brought home Ken Henderson for another. The Expos then got two more hits off Koosman in the top of the third, but failed to score.

In the sixth, Carter led off with a home run to cut the Met lead to 2-1. Koosman got the next three Expo batters on ground balls to get through the inning. The Mets then got a run in the bottom half on [[Lee Mazzilli]]'s double that scored [[Steve Henderson]].

Koosman set down the Expos in order in the seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets had two runners on base with two out when Mazzilli singled off reliever Stan Bahnsen. Steve Henderson tried to score from second base on the hit, but was thrown out at home by Montreal right fielder [[Ellis Valentine]].

In the ninth, Koosman again retired the Expos 1-2-3 to end the game. The Mets had their fourth consecutive season-opening victory. It was also Jerry's first win ever on Opening Day.

The Mets opened the season at Wrigley Field in Chicago. [[Tom Seaver]] got the start against the Cubs on a windy afternoon. The Mets came out with a 5-3 win.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Cubs got a run on Bobby Murcer's bunt single with two out that scored [[Jose Cardenal]]. A home run by Steve Ontiveros leading off the fourth made it a 2-0 Chicago lead. Meanwhile, the Mets were held to two hits (doubles by [[Dave Kingman]] and [[Ed Kranepool]]) by Cubs' starter [[Ray Burris]] over the first five innings.

Seaver walked to lead off the top of the sixth for the Mets. [[Lee Mazzilli]] added a single and [[John Milner]] hit a one-out double to score Seaver. An intentional walk to Kingman loaded the bases and Mazzilli scored the tying run on Kranepool's ground out. [[John Stearns]] then doubled to left field off Cubs' reliever Bruce Sutter, scoring Milner and Kingman to put the Mets ahead, 4-2. The Mets added another run in the seventh when [[Roy Staiger]] scored on Sutter's wild pitch.

For Chicago, Cardenal and Larry Biittner started the bottom of the eighth with singles off Seaver. [[Skip Lockwood]] came in to relieve and got Murcer to ground out. [[Jerry Morales]]'s force play grounder scored Cardenal before Skip got Ontiveros to pop up to third baseman Staiger for the final out of the inning.

Lockwood retired the Cubs in order in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Greg Gross grounded to Staiger to end the game. The Mets had an Opening Day victory for the third year in a row.

After two seasons with the Cardinals, Chris was taken by the Mets in the expansion draft on [[October 10]], 1961. He got to bat 133 times during the Mets' inaugural '62 season and hit .241 with 9 RBIs. On [[June 19]], Cannizzaro got two run-scoring singles in the Mets' 6-5 win over the Braves. He also delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single in the Mets' six-run eighth inning against the Giants on [[July 15]]. Both of these games were at the [[Polo Grounds]].

In [[1963]], Cannizzaro played in only 16 games for the Mets, getting 8 hits in 33 times at bat. Chris got a two-run single as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of the Mets' 4-2 loss at Houston on [[May 13]]. Cannizzaro's batting average soared to .311 in [[1964]]. He set new career highs with 10 doubles and 10 RBIs. In the second game of a doubleheader on [[May 31]], Cannizzaro was the catcher for all [[May 31, 1964: The 23-inning Nightcap|23 innings against the Giants]] at [[Shea Stadium]].

In '65, Chris played in 114 games for the Mets. He spent the entire [[1966]] season in the minor leagues and was sold to the Yankees after the season. After more time in the minors, Cannizzaro appeared in 25 games with the Pirates in [[1968]]. He then played six more years in the major leagues with the Padres, Cubs and Dodgers.

The Mets and Cubs opened the season on a Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The teams staged an offensive show, combining for 20 runs and 30 hits. The Mets won the game, 12-8.

The Cubs got out to a 1-0 lead on a home run by Tuffy Rhodes leading off the first inning. The Mets scored twice in the third on back-to-back home runs by [[Jose Vizcaino]] and [[Todd Hundley]] off Chicago starter Mike Morgan. Rhodes then hit his second homer off [[Dwight Gooden]] in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

In the fourth, the Mets' hitters went to work on Morgan. [[Jeff Kent]] led off with a home run to give New York a 3-2 lead. [[David Segui]] followed with a walk and [[Jeromy Burnitz]] hit a double. [[Ryan Thompson]] followed with another double to score Segui and Burnitz and moved to third base on Gooden's sacrifice bunt. Ryan came home on Vizcaino's sacrifice fly for the Mets' fourth run of the inning. The Cubs came right back in the bottom half with three runs on doubles by Derrick May and [[Shawon Dunston]] to make it a 6-5 game in favor of the Mets.

Facing rookie Blaise Ilsley in the fifth, the Mets scored three more runs. [[Kevin McReynolds]] came home on a fielder's choice grounder and Gooden's single scored Segui and Burnitz. In the bottom of the inning, Rhodes hit his third homer of the game off Gooden and Ryne Sandberg scored on May's ground out for two Chicago runs. The Mets scored again off Ilsley in the sixth on Kent's single that plated Hundley to stretch their lead to 10-7.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs had two runners on base with two out and Rhodes coming to the plate. Gooden was then replaced by reliever Eric Hillman, who walked Rhodes to load the bases for Chicago. Hillman followed up by getting Sandberg to line out to left fielder McReynolds for the final out of the inning.

After a scoreless seventh, the Mets got a run in the top of the eighth. [[Bobby Bonilla]] hit a one-out double off Jim Bullinger and went to third Kent's infield single. Segui followed with a sacrifice fly to score Bonilla. The Mets added another run in the top of the ninth when McReynolds singled home Vizcaino off Cubs' reliever Dan Plesac.

[[John Franco]] came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth for the Mets. Franco recorded two outs before giving up a single to May that scored Sandberg. John then retired Sammy Sosa on a fly ball to right fielder [[Joe Orsulak]] to end the game. The Mets had a victory in a high-scoring season opener.

The Mets began the new season at [[Shea Stadium]] against the Phillies. The crowd of 49,276 watched [[Dwight Gooden]] hold the Philadelphia batters to six hits in eight innings. The Mets came out with a 2-1 win.

Gooden set down the Phils in order before the Mets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. [[Vince Coleman]] doubled off Phillies' starter Terry Mulholland and scored on [[Gregg Jefferies]]' single. Dwight followed up with three shutout innings, allowing only two hits.

[[Hubie Brooks]] started the bottom of the fourth with a double off Mulholland. Later in the inning, Brooks was at third base when [[Tommy Herr]] drew a walk with two out. [[Charlie O'Brien]] was at the plate when Brooks and Herr put on a double steal. Both runners were safe and the Mets' lead was increased to two runs. However, the Phils got a run back in the top of the fifth on John Kruk's home run off Gooden.

In the sixth, Dwight got Kruk on a fly ball to left fielder [[Mark Carreon]] to end a Philadelphia scoring chance. He then retired the Phils 1-2-3 in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth. Meanwhile, Mulholland threw perfect fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets failed to score against reliever Joe Boever.

[[John Franco]] came in to relieve Gooden in the ninth. Franco started off by retiring Von Hayes on a ground ball to second baseman Herr. He then struck out Dale Murphy and got Kruk on a grounder to shortstop [[Howard Johnson]] to end the game. The Mets' season had begun with a victory.

The Mets faced the Dodgers on Memorial Day afternoon at [[Shea Stadium]]. It was a quick game of two hours and seven minutes in which [[Tom Seaver]] and the Dodgers' Andy Messersmith pitched complete games. The Mets won, 6-3, on [[Wayne Garrett]]'s home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

In the top of the first, Bill Buckner's single scored Dave Lopes to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. The Mets tied the game in the second on [[Jerry Grote]]'s two-out single that brought home [[Rusty Staub]] from second base. Home runs by [[Del Unser]] and [[Ed Kranepool]] off Messersmith in the bottom of the third put the Mets ahead, 3-1.

Seaver retired the Dodgers in order from the fourth inning to the sixth. In the seventh, Tom walked Jim Wynn and gave up a single to Willie Crawford amid two fly ball outs to center fielder Unser. Ron Cey doubled to right field, scoring Wynn and Crawford with the tying runs. Seaver got pinch-hitter Charlie Manuel to ground out, ending the inning.

Following a scoreless eighth, Seaver set down the Dodgers after a single to Steve Garvey in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half, [[Mike Phillips]] hit a one-out triple and Grote was walked intentionally. Garrett, pinch-hitting for Seaver, homered off Messersmith to end the game. The Mets had a holiday victory.
