Jonathon "Jon" Joseph Niese was born on October 27, 1986, the day the Mets won the World Series. A left-handed pitcher, he currently plays for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball.

[edit] Starting with the Mets

Niese made his Major League debut with the Mets on September 2, 2008 against the Brewers, and promptly became the first Met to ever give up a home run to the first batter he faced (Rickie Weeks). He then bounced back in his next start going 8 innings in a 5-0 win against the Braves.

Niese began 2009 in AAA and was mediocre until he developed a new pitch, a cutter, and suddenly excelled. He was called up, but in his third start, on August 5, Niese had a hamstring tear while making a play at first base. He took a warm-up pitch but when he threw the pitch he fell on the mound and missed the rest of the season.

He is expected to begin 2010 in the starting rotation.

On April 16, 2010 Niese in the third inning against the Flordia Marlins injuried his right hamstring which took him out of the game and had the same injury last year which put him on the 2009 DL. So then Hisanori Takahashi came in for Niese. Hisanori Takahashi will be in for Niese in his next start against the New York Yankees at Citi Field.

On June 5, 2010, Niese came back from the DL and pitched 7 innings getting the win making his record 2-2 against the Flordia Marlins at Citi Field by wiining to a score of 6-1.

On July 2, 2010, Niese got his first major league double and first RBI (Scored Alex Cora from third) off pitcher Luis Atilano.
